Gypsum board has a mineral core cast between two sheets of heavy paper. The gypsum core gives the board its thickness and fire resistance, while the paper faces add strength and create the smooth surface your paint sits on. The paper is not glued to the core. As the wet gypsum sets, crystals grow into the paper fibers and lock the two together.
